How Often Should Your Cat See the Vet for Optimal Health and Happiness

As a veterinarian, one of the most common questions I hear from cat owners is: How often should my cat see the vet? The answer depends on your cat’s age, but one thing is consistent—regular veterinary visits are one of the best ways to keep your cat healthy and help them live longer.
Cats move through several life stages, and their healthcare needs change as they age. I like to follow the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) recommendations, which allow us to monitor your cat’s health, discuss behavior and lifestyle, and catch problems early—often before your cat shows obvious signs of illness.

Kittens (Birth to 1 year)
Kittens need frequent veterinary visits, typically every 3 to 4 weeks starting at about 6 to 8 weeks old until they reach 16+ weeks old. During the first year of life, we monitor development, provide vaccines, discuss nutrition, and screen for congenital or early health concerns. These visits also help new cat owners learn what normal behavior and health look like for their kitten. These visits focus on:
Vaccinations to protect against diseases
Parasite prevention and treatment
Nutrition advice tailored to growth
Behavioral guidance for socialization
Testing for common viral diseases
Adult Cats (1 to 6 years)
This is often cats' healthiest stage of life, but that doesn’t mean they should skip the vet! Even if your cat seems perfectly healthy, annual visits help catch problems before they become serious. Cats often mask symptoms, so these exams are key to maintaining their happiness and well-being. These visits focus on:
Physical exams to detect subtle health changes
Weight and diet evaluations
Parasite prevention
Screening for common adult cat diseases
Mature (7 to 10 years) & Senior (10+ years) Cats Require More Frequent Care
As cats age, health changes can occur more quickly, and thus wellness visits should occur every 6 months. Regular checkups allow us to monitor for common conditions such as arthritis, kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, and high blood pressure. These frequent checkups help keep senior cats comfortable and active, improving their quality of life and focus on:
Monitoring chronic conditions
Blood work and urine tests to detect early issues
Adjusting diet and lifestyle for aging needs
Pain management and mobility support
Blood pressure monitoring
It is important to remember that cats are masters at hiding illness. By the time many cats show obvious symptoms, disease may already be advanced. Regular wellness visits allow veterinarians to prevent and to detect changes early and help cats live longer, healthier lives.
